"Depth of Soul" reviewed at Popmatters

Link: http://www.popmatters.com/pm/review/109012-martin-schultedepth-of-soul/

Martin Schulte
Depth of Soul
(Lantern)
US release date: 17 March 2009
UK release date: 16 March 2009
By Dominic Umile

Looped sound collages and creeping synths are peppered with empty factory clacks on Depth of Soul, an outing from Russian producer Martin Schulte that belongs filed under dub techno and should ensure a place for him amid the usual crowd’s output. The textural makeup of Depth‘s pieces is undeniably a motionless beast. “Mutation” is built around a singular note that’s for the most part merely folded into different tones—it doesn’t so much as unravel as it grows wider toward its close. At seven and a half minutes, the track would probably feel overlong if not for its ominously shifting percussive bed, infrequent backward rolls and an eventual dissonant pairing of what’s been here and what’s been festering. All this welcomes a mischievous soundtracking endeavor called “Supper”, where silverware clinks and chattering people drop ice into glasses during one of the more aurally satisfying—if abrasive—entries here. When Schulte breaks up the segments that threaten to linger with these adventurous patches of room ambience, the often set-friendly Depth of Soul bears the mark of a producer rattling some long-settled bones.

available here: http://www.boomkat.com/item.cfm?id=149230
and other record stores.

"Depth of the Soul" Reviewed by Igloo Magazine

Link: http://igloomag.com/document.php?task=view&id=1820&category=reviews&author=&keywords=&q=&limit=10

(June 2009) You can add the name Martin Schulte to a huge and ever-growing pulsating band of ambient-dub-techno exponents - one that may or may not rule from the centre of the Ultraworld, but certainly has acquired new powers. The embers of this smouldering sub-genre have been rekindled by new dub-smoke and tech-flames breaking out from Berlin (Quantec, Shoreless) to Bristol (Tectonic), Manchester (Modern Love) to Montreal (Atheus), London (Various) to uh... Kazan. Yup, that's Russia, for the geographically challenged, and that where Martin Schulte comes in: "The tracks represent my soul and is like a sound gallery of paintings." So says our Martin - known to passport controllers and his Mum as Marat Shibaev, evidently an earnest young man with a desire to get some Deep Inner out of his system and into ours.

As for the mantle of dub-techno torch-bearers, the likes of Rod Modell and Steve Hitchell (as DeepChord/Echospace/Intrusion et al.) had never really gone away, their efforts surely providing much of the fuel to this born again genre. Depth of Soul quickly establishes a recognisably Modell-ed dub-techno template with prickles of ambient detail, touches from the environmental and natural rubbed over to grain the beats. The set takes a while to gather pace but starts to draw the listener in around mid-way. Here "Forest" spools out a particularly successful blend of straightahead and reflective, a dead ringer for the UK's Modern Love label, hitching the depth of Pendle Coven to the soul of Claro Intelecto. Then "Mutation" and "Supper" ramp things up, serving out sustenance in the form of loop-driven bubble and squeak, sneaking in some more veiled gestures - to Basic Channel (cf. Fluxion) and Force Inc (cf. Yagya).

But Schulte isn't about to bother the envelop with too much pushing, despite the evident relish with which he releases textural infusions from his hard disk store of field recordings to muss up his otherwise straight-up dub-techery. Early on his scapes seem over-ready to land rather too obviously, seeking the safety of 4-on-the-floor dynamic solutions, and the heartbeat kick from which the blood of chord stabs and pads can get their pump action. There's more latitude later on, when "Solar Eclipse" hits with grit, bristles with gristle, and marches to a different drum; applying the kind of textural experiment applied elsewhere to his topping to the beat base, Schulte gets a reverb-drenched and distantly emplaced snare-rimshot to recur reverberatively to create a weirdly configured beat centre through a beauteous blur.

So, ultimately, success; when his set's doofist beat spine flexes, and is fleshed with a floating cast - a slurry and slick of granular textures and fluid strata. And, in the end, the set's weakness - a certain invariance and uniformity - is revealed as strength. After all, a certain song-same-iness is homogeneity by another name, and this is presumably the ambit of the project's narrowly conceived ambitions. For Depth of Soul feels like an album that wants to be experienced less in track-by-track taste mode, and more by the cumulative effect of the DJ-mix dynamic.

"Depth of the Soul" Reviewed at Exclaim.ca

While there are echoes of dub and Kompakt-influenced minimalism (his pseudonym hints at the gutte vibrations), there is a compacted surface to these tracks that render them dance floor-friendly. What distinguishes them from your average upper-middle tempo cuts are the detailed undercurrents built into pieces like "Big City Street" and "Supper." The latter's clattering flatware and mealtime chatter are more prominent, while the former features subliminal snippets of voice that encourage slightly paranoid sidelong glances. Even the less ambience-infected tracks are gibbous with little working parts. Even as the topmost 4/4 is prodding the plexus there are blurry washes that graze the surface, like moving water under ice. Having just cracked the big two-oh, Shibaev has many promising nights ahead of him. (Lantern)

"Far Away" reviewed at Cyclic Defrost Magazine

Link: http://www.cyclicdefrost.com/blog/?p=3246

In the comparative few years since 21 year old Kazan-based producer Marat Sibaev (aka Martin Schulte) emerged onto the European electronic scene, he’s certainly been a prolific guy, releasing a steady stream of netlabel material as well as two artist albums, including last year’s ‘Depth Of Soul’ collection for Japanese label Lantern. This fourth volume in Rednetic’s techno-oriented ultra-limited 3” CDR series presents four tracks from Schulte that range from ambient through to more dancefloor-oriented moods whilst traversing a deep dubby techno aesthetic that picks up nicely from where the previous volume from Komponente left off. ‘Seaside’ opens things gently on a near-ambient glitch-dub tip, with the slow, cyclical crackle of digital textures providing an almost heartbeat-like pulse around which echoing percussive tones, sampled waves and seagulls drift. While the use of such literal locational metaphors might be a risky proposition in other hands, Schulte manages to successfully build a sense of tangible atmosphere that carries with it a vague undercurrent of unease.

By contrast, ‘Road’ immediately accelerates out into streamlined Monolake-esque techno, with some rattling tribal percussion adding a welcome sharp-focus edge to the reverberating synthetic dub textures and sampled traffic sounds that rumble beneath in the bass spectrum, before ‘Clouds’ maintains the streamlined techno trajectory, veering the slow ambient synth pads towards more Detroit-tinged territory, whilst also sending brittle, glassy-sounding percussive textures rattling amidst a tight backbone of crisp, jacking rhythms. Finally, the epic ‘Lunar Empire’ offers up the real centrepiece of this EP, sending cut-up, eerie vocal samples rippling through a bass-heavy techno backdrop of tight snares and airy hi-hats, the smeared-out jangling keyboards colliding with some stretched vocal samples in a manner that beautifully draws out the dark soul undertones beneath. An excellent EP from Martin Schulte that’s also easily the most immediately dancefloor-friendly release I’ve heard to date from Rednetic. As with previous volumes in the series, the physical release is limited to just 100 copies, with a digital download also available from Rednetic.

V/A - Selected Moments II - Shoreless Recordings - 2009

V/A - Selected Moments II - Shoreless Recordings 00.4 (Limited CD)

Smallfish Review:
So, the burning question on everybody's lips will be 'was it worth the wait?' I have to say that the answer is a resounding 'YES!' 7 tracks from Brendon Moeller, Relapxych, Quantec, Bvdub, Fatih Tuter, Severence and Martin Schulte that not even once sound anything other than totally gorgeous. I'm glad that Shoreless has gone down this more overtly ambient route for the second compilation - I think it's very becoming and certainly sits extremely happily within the virtual walls of Smallfish. Brendon Moeller kicks things off with, quite frankly, exactly the kind of deep ambient track that I'd give my right arm to be able to produce. It references both house and techno in the style of the chords but leaves it drifting in a beatless way throughout. I have to say that it's pure quality through and through. Relapxych delivers a magnificently majestic and beautifully meditative work that flanges and phases its way through 10 magic minutes of pure bliss. Not to be outdone Quantec comes next with a simply luscious cut that's all about the atmosphere. One of the only beat orientated tracks on the album it nevertheless has such a pure sense of space and form that it sits perfectly with the others. No need for lengthy introductions when it comes to Bvdub - he's conjured up yet another awesome slice of ethereal, fluid and delicately emotional ambient bliss. Do I need to say any more? Didn't think so. Just brilliant. Fatih Tuter drops next with the super-fine Drive. This is more of a Berlin-laced cut than the others with that slightly gritty sounding chord stab flavour that drives the background textures along. It almost threatens to dive into beats at times with its sub bass tone and hypnotic shaker percussion elements, but it always holds back - an object lesson in how to not overdo things. Class. Severence comes next and with an outstanding contribution to the first Selected Moments it's perfectly fair to expect him to meet those standards here. He does. And then some. Stripping it back to the most reduced sound and allowing the filtering to create the movement, he's really delving into some serious depths. A wicked track and definitely one for fans of the old school Chain reaction sound (not that I'm comparing, you understand. Just a reference for you). Finally, Martin Schulte finishes up the album. You may have enjoyed his release on Rednetic (I'll need some more of those, by the way) - I know I did. This takes his penchant for the deepest dub techno and strips it free of beats completely. Layers of sound and texture almost drown you with their aquatic feel which, I have to say, is a deeply pleasing feeling indeed. So, there you have it. I don't often break whole albums down like this, but I feel it's important to tell you that it really is an exquisite piece of work. Comes in a metal tin and is limited to 110 copies by all accounts. That means I'm going to have to bug them to make some more I guess. Enjoy

Links:

http://www.smallfish.co.uk/shop/release/?cat=SHORELESS00.4

http://www.interstellarsounds.com/product.php?productid=2925&cat=166&page=1

http://clone.nl/item14078.html

http://www.myspace.com/shorelessrecordings

Reviews of "Far Away" and "Picture of Nothing" by Textura

Komponente: Picture of Nothing
Rednetic
http://www.rednetic.net/releases/?relID=150

Martin Schulte: Far Away
Rednetic
http://www.rednetic.net/releases/?relID=151

Rednetic recently started up a three-inch techno series with the tiny, twenty-minute discs housed in similarly-designed cases (the distinguishing detail the changing colour rectangle on the right edge of the maroon red cover). The third and fourth installments, dub-techno outings by Komponente and Martin Schulte respectively, provide a solid impression of the series' appeal.

The set by Komponente gives us three versions of “Picture of Nothing,” with the Kharkov, Ukraine-based producer's original joined by treatments by Martin Schulte and Waveform. Easy on the ears, the original cruises at a modest gait, content to soak up the scenery and let dubby atmosphere accumulate until its lightly-stepping beats are soaked in reverberant haze and its chords seem to almost melt into liquid. Schulte re-shapes the original's pulse into an hypnotic, slow-motion lurch and builds it up with even more layers of haze, crackle, and static, after which Waveform's clubbier treatment amps up the BPM without losing the original's languorous feel in the process.

Kazan-born Schulte (real name Marat Shibaev) isn't coy about any associations his dub-techno tracks might have. “ Seaside ” comes into view with seagulls and crashing waves augmenting a restrained beat workout of dubwise design, after which the thrusting techno of “Road” gets things moving in grand style with a graceful fusion of Echospace, Claro Intelecto, Andy Stott, and Pendle Coven. The lighter-than-air “Clouds” struts across the sky with gleeful purpose while the longest and most epic cut, “Lunar Empire,” burrows through a reverb-drenched tunnel armed with a hefty bass pulse and blanketed by blurry atmosphere. Schulte's material (which would sound fabulous on vinyl) is obviously tailor-made for those who like their techno deep and dubby.

June 2009

Link: http://www.textura.org/reviews/komponente_schulte.htm

Рецензия журнала "De:Bug" на альбом "Depth of Soul"

http://www.myspace.com/lanternrecords

thaddi

Link: http://www.de-bug.de/reviews/35642.html
